Description:

BRADLEY T. JOHNSON
(1829 - 1903) Confederate brigadier general who served in Jackson's Valley campaign and during the Seven Days. He also burned Chambersburg, Pa. under orders by Jubal Early. Good political content A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Frederick, Md., July 14, 1853 to future Confederate Gen. Henry A. Wise, then governor of Virginia who was to be part of a Democratic rally to elect Maryland Democrats. He writes, in most part: "We propose inaugurating the Campaign in Maryland by a Grand Mass Meeting...Cass & Douglas will be with us, & we are satisfied that if your name could be added to the list, it would go far to assist in dispelling the Lactacean darkness which rests in the mind of this people & in bringing them to the light of democracy by which their Fathers so long & steadfastly walked. Missionary effort is much needed, & we know that no one could be more successful than yourself. We are aware that the position to which the people of Virginia have done themselves honor by elevating you may interfere or prevent your taking the stump in your own State ~ but we hope your views of duty may not debar the people of Maryland the pleasure & advantage of hearing you ~ We are frank to say that in one opinion the vote of Maryland Depends upon our success in these Western Counties, & our success here depends on the success of our meeting. No effort is therefore being spared to bring our people together in such a mass as has not hence ever since '40 ~ Your presence sir will eminently conduce to that end, & therefore we reiterate on the part of those we represent & ourselves personally this request that you will do us the honor to address us on that occasion…" Usual folds, else very good to fine condition.
