An fine content War-date A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., General Hospital, White Hall, Pa., May 19, 1865. While being discharged, Hammons writes a farewell letter to his nurse. Original sentence structure and grammatical errors left intact, it reads in part: "....I can but render you my thanks and adoration for your much labour both mental and physical, by which your many and much energys have bin exhibited towards us - the colored soldiers. For I can safely say that you have spaired no pains in the imparting of your talents given to you among our benighted dark minded race. For never did I expect to meet with such benevolent hearts sympathizing and loving kindness as has been exhibited towards us by you and your comrades since having bin under your attention...I do not ever expect to meet with such auspicious and exquisiteness in either Ladies or Gentleman...my argumentive ability is intirely incapable of expressing your worthy religious labours. Therefore I will refur to one, who, while we shall hold you in everlasting remembrance, is smiling upon your profound goodness...And now I am not particularly informed of all the Ladies wether they Married or single; but will say may the Blessing of God ever abide with them on Earth...may happiness ever attend with compassions if such is the lot of any of them....may the life of the Bride-groom be spent in the promotion of their happiness....and may thir lives be like that of Zachariah and Elizabeth of Old. Now as you have my greatest Prayers now and Forever I can but close...". Some minor fraying at the borders with a loss of two partial words art the top of the second page, otherwise very good condition.
