(LEONARD BERNSTEIN) Important group of three telegrams (two retained copies) relative to the performance of Bernstein's Kaddish Symphony No. 3 by the Israeli Philharmonic in late 1963. Two of the telegrams are copies of those sent by Phillip Lambro, composer and Asst. Director of Publications at Bernstein's publishing house. G. Schirmer, to the Israel Philharmonic, and one telegram from the orchestra director to Lambro. A dispute has arisen over the fact that Bernstein wanted a female (Hanna Rovina) to recite his Kaddish, which in Orthodox synagogues is recited only by men. The orchestra director notes: "Rovina presently in Russia...Urge you consider Kaddish recited by men only thus perhaps male actor more suitable..." Lambro replies: "...Wish to clarify speaker situation...Speaker's text is not Kaddish , but long original poem by Bernstein in contemporary style for woman narrator...Requires translation by excellent modern Israeli poet...Materials will be rushed as soon as possible piecemeal...Bernstein would like to know Hanna Rovina's availability to perform speaking part... ". Fine condition. With an unrelated telegram from Bernstein to Schirmer, June 23, 1952: "...Please bring with you as many piano vocal scores of Tahiti as possible at least six and the orchestral score if it can be carried..." Four pieces. $350-450
