Description:

World War I-era German "Pickelhaube" helmet, of the style worn by Bavarian police officers, constructed of lacquered black leather, with a brass cruciform plate at the crown topped with a 4 1/2" brass spike. The front bears a "wappen", or helmet plate, depicting the coat of arms of the German state of Bavaria, two crowned rampant lions flanking a crowned orb, over a banner bearing the motto "In Treue Fest" ("In Faith"). An ornamental leather chin strap, covered with overlapping brass plates, runs across the visor, attached by brass lion's heads, and with a single black, gold and red cockade on the left-hand side. The brass fittings are secured within by brass split pins. The interior features a brown leather sweatband with a brown silk lining, split down the middle to allow access to the mounting screws. The rear visor is slightly deformed, with slight drying and cracking to the leather overall, else very good.
