Description:

(1895 - 1970) British soldier, military historian and military theorist who wrote a series of military histories that proved influential among strategists. He argued that frontal assault was a strategy that was bound to fail at great cost in lives, as happened in 1914-1918. He instead recommended the 'indirect approach' and reliance on fast-moving armored formations. Great association signed book, his 'Defence of the West' (London: Cassell & Company), 390pp. 8vo., black cloth, gilt lettering on the lightly worn spine. On the flyleaf, the book is inscribed: 'To Walter Warlimont with every good wish for the New Year from Basil Liddell Hart Christmas 1951...' A P.O.W. censor's stamp appears at center right. WALTER WARLIMONT (1894-1976) was a German officer, Senior Operations Staff Officer to Wilhelm Keitel, and a member of Hitler's inner circle. He was tried at Nuremberg in the High Command Trial and sentenced to life imprisonment as a war criminal. He was released in 1954.
