FRANCIS C. BARLOW (1834 - 1896) Union brigadier general severely wounded at Antietam and again at Gettysburg, where he was sheltered and saved by Confederate Gen. John B. Gordon. A great war-date Union general's A. L. S. "Francis C. Barlow ", 2pp. 8vo., Head-Quarters, 1st Div. 2nd Corps, [North Anna River, Va.], May 26, 1864 10 p.m. written, in pencil, to Lt. Col. Walker, assembling his artillery on the North Anna. In part: "...I have the honor to report that no batteries of artillery have yet reported to me & I have not been informed as to what batteries have been assigned to this Div. I am making my arrangements in accordance with orders rec'd. Affairs are progressing favorably...P.S. I am ignorant of the position of all artillery except Brown's battery which is on my line. My Hd. Qrs. are...at the bridge head on the crest... ". Endorsed in the upper margin, in part: "...respectfully referred to Col. Tidball chief of artillery. By order of Maj. Gen. Hancock... ". Later that night, Grant and the Army of the Potomac slipped Lee's noose and withdrew across the North Anna and headed towards the blood fields of Cold Harbor. Minor soiling, else very good. $600-700
