Description:

(b. 1961) 44th President of the United States, and the first African American to hold the office. Excellent association A.N.S. on a White House greeting card, 1p. 6 1/2" x 4", Washington, D.C., [n.d.], in full: "Dear Betty - Happy 100th Birthday, from one Punahou graduate to another!" He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. In fine condition. After his birth in Honolulu in 1961, Obama and his mother moved between Hawaii, Seattle and Indonesia several times until 1971 when he returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents. He attended the Punahou School, a private college-preparatory school in Honolulu, from fifth grade until his graduation from high school. Of his school years, Obama later wrote: "The opportunity that Hawaii offered – to experience a variety of cultures in a climate of mutual respect – became an integral part of my world view, and a basis for the values that I hold most dear." The "Betty" to whom Obama writes is almost certainly ELIZABETH PEET MACINTOSH (1915-2015), who served as an undercover agent for the OSS (the forerunner of the CIA), waging a disinformation campaign through the distribution of fake reports, postcards and documents designed to demoralize Japanese troops in India and China during World War II.
