Description:

BARACK H. OBAMA, JR.
(b. 1961) The 44th and current President of the United States, and the first African American to hold the office. Exceptional D.S., 8pp. 4to. on "Obama '08" letterhead, [n.p., 2008], the text of a campaign speech given by Obama in Philadelphia across the street from Independence Hall. Obama centers his comments on race, and in particular defends himself in the Rev. Jeremiah Wright scandal. In part: "...[the Constitution] was stained by this nation's original sin of slavery...the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty more years...words on parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage...This was one of the tasks we set forth at the beginning of this campaign - to continue the long march...we may have different stories, but we have common hopes...I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas...some commentators have deemed me either 'too black' or 'not black enough'...race in this campaign has taken a particularly divisive turn...we've heard my former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, use incendiary language...that denigrate both the greatness and goodness of our nation...I have already condemned...the statements of Reverend Wright...a similar anger exists within segments of the white community...It's a racial stalemate we've been stuck in for years...". Much more extraordinary content! Very fine. Copies available.
