[ Autographs ] JOHN MARSHALL (1755 - 1835) Supreme Court Chief Justice and the principal founder of the American system of constitutional law, including the doctrine of judicial review. A.L.S. "J. Marshall," 2pp. 8vo., Richmond, July 14, 1890, to a gentleman regarding a libel trial and other legal matters. In part: "...It is probable that the trial of the libel against Pamela may be about the 22nd -- In that case I would appear for ten guineas if you give me notice in time, but if it should be postponed till about the month of August I could not attend...Perhaps tho the citation may not issue atall...". Light age toning, otherwise boldly written and very good.
