Description:

AUSCHWITZ BLUEPRINT TO CONVERT CHURCH INTO AN SS THEATER
An incredible blueprint symbolic of the Nazis' depravity, depicts the proposed conversion of a Catholic church in Auschwitz into a theater to be used to entertain SS officers, soldiers, and their families. The blueprint is titled: "DRAFT FOR THE BUILDING-OUT OF THE SALESIAN CLOISTER AUSCHWITZ O.S.", a 28" x 28" working copy from the Sep. 12, 1941 original, bears original corrections prepared by architect Hans Stosberg who had established his practice Auschwitz. This plan, heavily revised, calls for the elimination of the altar, replaced with a stage erected before 375 seats with 91 additional seats in the balcony. A changing room is so labeled, as is a foyer and buffet for the use of guests. The church illustrated was apparently the Church of Our Lady, Help of the Poor, and it does not appear that the proposed construction was undertaken as that church remains in operation today. Hans Stosberg (1903-1989) was appointed chief city architect of Auschwitz. He was called upon to design Himmler's vision of a city which - powered by slave laborers at the concentration camp and IG Farben factory - would grow into a model German community. The new Auschwitz was to have, among other things, an athletic stadium, numerous schools, playgrounds, and even hotels along the Sola River to draw tourists. It was, in Stosberg's words, going to turn Auschwitz into "a true cultural landscape."
