Description:

(1810 - 1878) Prussian military officer and early proponent of communism who emigrated to the United States and became a general in the Union Army, gaining fame for his defeat of Terry's Texas Rangers. Good content war-date A.L.S. "A. Willich", 2pp, 4to., Chattanooga, Nov. 9, 1863, to Indiana governor Oliver P. Morton. Willich makes certain requests to bolster the effectiveness of recently-raised units under his command, in small part: "...By the new organization of the Army of the Cumberland I lost an excellent Indiana Regiment, the 39th Mounted Infantry, and got the 18 Indiana in its place... I would very much like to add one or two of our Indiana Regiments to my command and ask your cooperation in this request... You are aware how severely my Brigade suffered at Chickamauga, and to make it effective again an augmentation in numbers is the first basis... By brigading the new Regiments with old ones, they not only receive all the benefits of good example in drill, policing, cooking etc., but in meeting the enemy, they find themselves supported by firm troops and under proper management will be secured against 'panics' which so often is the ruin of untried Regiments..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Brig. Genl. Vol." Shows original mailing folds and a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, else very good.
