Description:

(1769 - 1852) British general and statesman known as the "Iron Duke", he crushed French forces under Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. A.N.S. "Wellington", 1p. 8vo., London, March 19, 1835, to Sir Robert Wilson, in full: "Dear Sir Robert, I return the [enclosed?] and will not forget the name." He signs at the conclusion in black ink. The note is also signed as received by Sir Robert Wilson at bottom, with a third writer, a Henry Forster, adding and signing his own notation "But you did [?] forget it [the name]". Forster also adds and signs a further inscription on the facing leaf: "Memorandum of the Great Duke of Wellington's [?] to myself received from Sir Rob't Wilson" and "The D of Wellington's own handwriting". Shows heavy folds with some possible splits, appears to be backed with another sheet of paper, mounted in a vintage black leather frame with a gilt label at bottom. Very good. SIR ROBERT THOMAS WILSON (1777-1849) was British general and politician who served in Flanders, Egypt, Iberian Peninsula, Prussia, and was seconded to the Imperial Russian Army in 1812. He served under Wellington at Oporto and Talavera.
