ARTHUR ST. CLAIR
(1734 - 1818) Revolutionary War major general serving at Trenton and Princeton, commanded Ft. Ticonderoga, President of the Continental Congress and first governor of the Northwest Territory. Partly printed D.S., "A. St. Clair", 1p., oblong 12mo., [Cincinnati], Feb. 27, 1803, a Bank of the United States check completely in St. Clair's hand, made payable to "A.S." in the amount of ten dollars. St. Clair was once quite wealthy, but died nearly penniless due to his many gifts and loans. Toning, mounting traces on verso, overall very good.
