Description:

ARCHIVE OF B-17 AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHER S/SGT DOUGLAS CRYSEL
An outstanding grouping of about 150 photos of various sizes, virtually all over 4" x 6" and many 8" x 10", from the wartime collection of Army Air Corps B-17 photographer S/Sgt Douglas Crysel. The sergeant's career in the army appears to have started in Alaska, where about twenty of so photos show airfields, crashed airplanes and stranded crew, unique aircraft paint schemes, etc. From there, Crysel moved to the European Theater where his excellent photography depicts airplane formations and maneuvers, battle-damaged aircraft on the ground and in flight, raids on Ploesti and Rome, and resulting damage, doomed airmen, many classified and unclassified images of destroyed aircraft, and so on. Some of the images appear to be from the Signal Corps, but the huge majority are clearly original. Many are captioned on the verso in two different hands, perhaps by Crysel and an assistant. Also present is Crysel's "Amico Sterling" Air Gunner's Badge, Air Corps shoulder patch and triangular Aerial Photographer patch. A fine grouping, in very good condition.
