Description:

Large grouping of documents, letters, passports, etc. from Paul Kaempf, an anti-fascist, anti-Hitler German from Thuringia who was arrested and imprisoned at Buchenwald to "protect the public". The grouping, about 25 pieces, starts with a 1933 letter sent to Kaempf, the mayor of the town Waltershausen in Gotha, requesting that he appear at an NSDAP office. On June 7th, he is notified that he is to be arrested in order to: "...secure the public safety and well-being..." and in November, 1934, he is told that his earlier activities "against the state" prohibited him from working as a legal counselor. There is a letter from Kaempf to his wife on a prisoner's letterhead from Buchenwald, 1p. 8vo., Jan. 7, 1945. He states that he has received her package, and states that there have been no changes. He hopes for the best, and adds: "...Bernstein's house was flattened [by a bomb] and Frau Bernstein was badly hurt...", and a Buchenwald SS cantine scrip note. Other documents include a Kaemp's 1946 East German Socialist party membership card showing that he had been a member since 1904 to 1933; VBN membership card showing that he had been persecuted by the Nazis; his birth certificate, pay and membership books, wedding certificate, death certificate and death announcement, etc. Also present is a small burlap uniform tag bearing Kaempf's Buchenwald prisoner number and a red triangle, very lightly used and possibly added to the grouping later. Overall very good. Interestingly, after the war, Kaempf was returned to his pre-war position as Mayor of Waltershausen!
