ARCHIBALD COX
(1912 - 2004) American lawyer and law professor who served as U.S. Solicitor General under President John F. Kennedy and as a special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal. Cox refused a direct order from the White House to seek no further tapes or presidential materials, and Nixon fired him in an incident that became known as the Saturday Night Massacre. Cox's firing produced a public relations disaster for Nixon. T.L.S. 1p. 4to., on Harvard Law School letterhead, Cambridge, Massachusetts, Nov. 26, 1990, replying to a request for information on one of the Watergate tapes. Cox replies in part: ‘…I am sorry to have to tell you that my knowledge of the Watergate tape from which eighteen minutes is missing is exhausted. I am not able to answer your question. I do send my best wishes.' Very lightly toned, mailing folds, otherwise fine.
