Description:

Pair of rare anti-Semitic tokens sharing the same design, both 1 ½" dia., one cast in bronze and the other aluminum. The obverse of both depicts a large, nude man with outstretched arms seated on a large stack of grain, with the legend: "Ob Jud Ob Christ Ein Schuft Der Wucherer Ist" (""Whether Jew or Christian the Usurer is a Villain"). The reverse bears the warning: "In Bosen Zeiten Ist Ohn Zweifel Ein Mensch Oft Des Andern Teufel" (""In Evil Times, Without Doubt, One Man is Often the Devil to Another"), over the date 1923. The date again appears at the top, with the initials "FH" for the designer, Saxon medalist Friedrich Wilhelm Hornlein. The design likely offers a criticism of monetary practices during the German hyperinflation crisis of the 1920's. Both show slight oxidation, else very good.
