Description:

Rather terrifying set of three German inflation-era "notgeld", or emergency currency notes, each 4" x 3 ¼", produced by the city of Sternberg in Meckenburg. The 100-pfennig notes, printed in 1922, together depict scenes from a semi-mythical fable in which a destitute priest sells communion bread to a group of Jews to use in sacrificial rituals, and their subsequent punishment. The first note shows the priest, Peter Dane, presenting the bread to the Jews, while the second shows the bread bleeding as the Jews repeatedly stab it on a sacrificial table. The third note, by far the most graphic, shows the offending Jews being burned at the stake. The verso of each note depicts the Sternberg skyline, circa the fable's setting in 1492. The notes are housed in a commemorative envelope titled "The Holy Blood of Sternberg of the Year 1492 in the City-Records of the of the City in Sternberg in Mecklenburg". The interior of the envelope reprints the story of Peter Dane and the Jews in great detail, and the lot is sold with a typed translation. The envelope shows one small chip, else very good to fine. Also present is an even more graphic 50-pfennig "notgeld" note, issued by the municipality of Tostedt in Lower Saxony, depicting on the recto two Jews in silhouette hanging from nooses from a tree. Four pieces.
