Lot 755
755. ANTI-HORSE THIEF ASSOCIATION Printed pamphlet, Constitution of the State Grand Orders of the Anti-Horse Thief Association, 12pp. 16mo., [n.p., n.d. c. 1863], detailing the regulations and organization of the association, first established at Luray, Mo. in September 1863. The outbreak of the Civil War saw an increase in lawlessness in the border states, especially in Missouri and Kansas, horse-thieving being one of the key elements. Sparse population, coupled with a lack of police protection convinced residents to band together for the purpose of putting an end to this problem. After the war, the association's scope widened to cover a wider range of crimes. Sold together with a postcard, dated July 7, 1887 in which J. B. Willis of Altmont, Kan. advertises the theft of a "Birth bay horse, eight years old..." offering a $25 reward. Two pieces, very good condition. $200-300
