Description:

AN XI LIGHT CAVALRY TROOPER''S SWORD
Napoleonic French "An XI" (Year 11) Light Cavalry Trooper''s Sword, 33 1/2" blade, 39" overall, so named after the year it was introduced according to the French Revolutionary calendar. The sword features an elegantly curved blade, as well as a three-bar brass handguard and hilt. The flats of the blade are plain apart from three hallmarks on the obverse ricasso, for the inspectors Bick, Lobstein, and Krantz. The Bick and Krantz stamps also appear on the hand guard, along with a third well-worn mark. The spine of the blade is inscribed "M-f''ture Imp-ale Du Klingenthal Mai 1813", indicating the place and date of manufacture. The grip is dark brown leather, secured with an oblong brass nut on each side, seemingly lacking the brass wire wrapping seen in other examples. The sword is housed in a bright steel scabbard. The steel of the scabbard bears minor surface oxidation, with some slight verdigris to the brass fittings, but the blade is bright, very good overall.
