Description:

AN XI LIGHT CAVALRY TROOPER''S SWORD
Napoleonic French "An XI" (Year 11) Light Cavalry Trooper''s Sword, 33 1/2" blade, 39" overall, so named after the year it was introduced according to the French Revolutionary calendar. The sword features an elegantly curved blade with a "clip"-style tip, as well as a three-bar brass handguard and hilt. The blade is heavily engraved with numerous motifs on both sides, including a fasces, cannon spear, sword, and crowned eagles. The obverse is engraved with the name of the makers, "Coulaux Freres", while the reverse bears the place of manufacture, "Manufacture de Klingenthal". It is possible that this sword was privately commissioned, as examples procured by the government listed this information on the spine of the blade. The ricasso bears a gilt finish. The grip is covered with brown leather wrapped with braided brass wire, and secured with an oblong brass nut on each side. The sword is housed in a bright steel scabbard. The steel of the scabbard bears minor surface oxidation, with some slight verdigris to the brass fittings, but the blade is bright, very good overall.
