AMERICAN TRADE WITH THE FAR EAST, EARLY 1800S
Collection of 25 documents and letters, 1809 to 1871 (most from the 1840s) regarding trade and shipping matters, most from Manila, Singapore, and Batavia (Dutch East Indies). Content touches on financial matters, cargo manifests, landing certificates, fees due, etc. Several are signed by U.S. Consuls. Included are five letters from the firm Russell & Sturgis, each is signed "Russell & Sturgis," 1840s, from Manila, to London merchants, re: financial and shipping matters. RUSSELL STURGIS (1805-87), went to Harvard College at age 12, and then briefly practiced law in Boston. He sailed for Canton, China in 1833 on behalf of an opium smuggler, John Perkins Cushing. He was a partner in the firms: Russell & Sturgis of Manila; Russell & Sturgis Company of Canton; and Russell & Company. WITH a document, Debenture Certificate, 2pp, 1843, folio, from Batavia, part of their cargo was "Forty nine Baskets Champagne'. WITH three D.S.s, "J. Balestier" as U.S. Consul at Singapore, 1 page each, oblong folio, re financial matters. JOSEPH BALESTIER (1788-1858) was an American merchant, and U.S. Consul at Singapore. His wife, Maria, was the daughter of Paul Revere. Much more. Light wear, overall very good condition.

Shipments are sent USPS Priority, USPS International Priority, DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made.
