Description:

AMERICAN NCO'S CAMOUFLAGED CAMP BOX
An unusual World War I relic, a wood box for personal items, hand-painted with a camouflage pattern by an American corporal. The sturdily-constructed box with a hinged upper lid measures 14 in. wide x 9.5 in. tall x 9.5 in. deep, with dovetailed joints. Within, there is a 2 in. deep tray with four compartments, and a cinched pouch named to 'Walt L. Swanson' and a leather change pouch are included. The underside of the top lid has a wood-mounted oval mirror, this also on a hinge which swings open to reveal more storage space. The clear varnish finish within is completely intact. The exterior of the box once bore a simple clear varnish and the initials 'W.L.S' stenciled at either end. At some point, Swanson added a typical World War I painted camouflage pattern, avoiding the pre-painted initials. He also added corporal's stripes beneath each set of initials. The paint shows wear and tear, consistent with field use. A very nice relic.
