Description:

AMERICAN FIELD-MADE FIGHTING KNIFE
Fine example of a World War II fighting knife, 5 1/2" blade, 10" overall, crafted in the field by an American soldier in the Pacific Theater. The blade appears to be professionally forged, but is unmarked, and is married to an aluminum handle with a hand guard and curved quillon, fastened together with brass rivets. The grips are formed form stacked plastic rings, with two b/w snapshots secured beneath the center scales, one showing a woman in a fur coat, and the other a man with a young child. The knife is house in a scabbard consisting of an aluminum face riveted to a copper backing, with a leather belt loop and leather fringe decorations. The front of the scabbard bears the incised nickname "Tiny", as well as "P.E. May '44", likely the name of the craftsman who constructed the piece. It further bears the incised names of three Pacific Theater postings: "New Caledonia", "New Hebrides", and "Guadalcanal". The knife and scabbard show some wear and minor oxidation, else very good.
