Good pair of early nineteenth-century books, book dealing with matters of crime and punishment. Includes: "The United States Criminal Calendar: or An Awful Warning to the Youth of America", ed. Henry St. Clair (Boston: Charles Gaylord), 1835, 356pp. 8vo. Subtitled "Being an Account of the Most Horrid Murders, Piracies, Highway Robberies &c. &c." The book compiles the most well-known criminal cases of American history to that point, including the Salem Witch Trials; the exploits of pirates Robert Kidd, Samuel Bellamy, and William Fly (among others); the mutiny aboard the whaler GLOBE; and numerous other arsonists, forgers, pirates and murderers. The book is illustrated with fifteen vivd engravings depicting the most lurid aspects of the described crimes, two of which are reproduced on the taupe board covers. Shows some splitting to the binding, with foxing throughout , and notable bumps and wear to the covers, else very good. WITH: "The Code of 1650, Being a Compilation of the Earliest Laws and Orders of the General Court of Connecticut" (Hartford: Andrus & Judd), 1835, 119pp. 12mo., a compendium of Connecticut "Blue Laws" governing morality and public decorum. The book is illustrated opposite the title page with a rather hilarious engraving of a constable apprehending a "tobacco taker", as the offender spits the "tea" into his face. Shows some foxing, with bumps, wear and soiling to the covers, else very good. Two pieces.
