Description:

AMELIA EARHART
(1897 - 1937) American aviator, the first woman to cross the Atlantic, first solo across the Atlantic and first Hawaii-Mainland solo; lost in an around-the-world attempt. An extremely rare S.P. 10" x 8" b/w photograph of Earhart, posing in front of her Lockheed Electra 10E with her navigator FRED NOONAN, together with Hollywood stunt pilot, PAUL MANTZ, and alternate navigator, HARRY MANNING, all four of whom add their signatures beside their respective figures. The photograph was taken in Oakland, Calif., on March 17, 1937, the day Earhart took off on her first attempt to make an around-the-world flight. That attempt was cut short when during an attempt at take-off for the next leg in Hawaii, the plane ground-looped due to a failure of the landing gear. Earhart's Electra was severely damaged and had to be shipped back to Oakland for repairs. Her second, and final attempt, started again from Oakland, but this time she traveled west to east. Earhart and Noonan disappeared over the Pacific on July 2, 1937. We know of only one other photograph signed by both Noonan and Earhart, which sold in 2000 for $15,000 (Butterfield, Dec. 14, 2000, lot 4171). Minor creases at corners, else very fine condition.
