Description:

AMBROSE P. HILL
(1825 - 1865) Confederate lieutenant general who led Hill's Light Division through the Battles of Cedar Mountain, Antietam and Chancellorsville, led the III Corps at Gettysburg, killed in the final defense of Petersburg. Rare war-date A.D.S. 'A. P. Hill Maj. Gen.' written in pencil at the bottom of a 1p. legal folio list headed 'Hospital Attendants 8th Regiment N.Y.V. Cavalry', [Harpers Ferry, September, 1862].The boldly-penned list includes the names and hospital positions of 30 hospital nurses and staff members, as well as officers and men being treated at the captured facility. At bottom, the merciful general writes: 'Harpers Ferry Sept. 17[?] 1862 The above officers and men have been paroled [and] are permitted to pass into the Federal lines. A. P. Hill Maj. Gen.' Hill's note is a bill light but completely legible. Lower-right corner excised, else very good. Harpers Ferry was under siege by Jackson from Sep. 12-15, 1862 when the garrison surrendered, with over 12,000 soldiers captured.
