Description:

(1904-1996) Embattled government official in the Roosevelt administration who was accused of spying for the Soviets, convicted of perjury, served five years in prison and spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name. Good lot of four signed items, includes: A.L.S. "Alger", 1p. 4to. New York, Nov. 12, 1995, to Dorothy Globus. Hiss, writing late in life in a rather shaky hand, rendering the contents unclear. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. WITH: A.L.S. "Alger", 1p. 4to., Dec. 15, [1995], again to Dorothy Globus. In small part: "You have been such a loyal supporter of mine that I want to keep you informed of major developments in my case... And as the Times refused to print Tim's letter you should not be so upset that you got summarily ignored when you wrote to the President." He again signs at the conclusion in black ink. Both pieces fine WITH: The transmittal letters for the above two pieces, each 7 1/2" x 4", addressed to Dorothy Globus and with Hiss executing his surname in black ink in the return address of each. Ragged at the top edges where opened, else very good. Also present are several enclosures mentioned in the second letter, a photocopy newspaper article and two photocopies of a letter from "Tim", related to a former Soviet general and historian, Dimitri Volkogonov, who claimed that his review of KGB files showed no evidence that Hiss was spying for Russia, a claim he later retracted.
