Description:

ALEXIS CARREL
(1873 - 1944) French physician whose experiments with the transplantation and repair of body organs led to advances in the field of surgery and tissue culture. He was the first to develop a successful technique for suturing blood vessels together. Later a collaborator in pro-Nazi Vichy France. Fine content, war-date T.L.S. 1p. 4to., Paris, Feb. 5, 1944, to Dr. T. Malachowski in Bellegarde du Loiret. In part: "...I have learned from your letter...that you have been confined to your home because of seizures and chest pains. Do you have the necessary medications?...The idea of spreading the idea of eugenics throughout France is an excellent one. Dr. Fortunet could perhaps set up a small society composed of three or four of his friends who are cognizant of his goals. This group would be charged with the administration of the funds to be allocated to the prize, chosen by jury, and would ascertain that this prize was always awarded in accordance with the intentions of the donor...". Naturally, promulgating the ideology of eugenics was of interest to Carrel who championed the idea of a "hereditary biological aristocracy" in his 1935 volume L'Homme, c'est Inconnu (Man, The Unknown). From this theory , Carrel thus promoted the idea of euthanizing "undesirable" persons such as criminals, adding, in the preface to this work, his admiration of Third Reich policies of eugenics. Boldly signed and very good.
