Description:

(1899-1976) German major-general who commanded the 'Brandenburg' special forces unit in 1943-44, imprisoned by the Gestapo under suspicion of involvement in the 'Operation Valkyrie' assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944. It was believed that he was selected as the commander of the 'Brandenburgers' by Abwehr chief Wilhelm Canaris and his deputy Hans Oster, who planned to utilize the unit to seize Hitler's 'Wolf's Lair' during the resulting coup. Rare partly-printed D.S. as "Hauptmann", 1p. 4to., Hirschberg, March 14, 1936, an 'Anerkennung der arischen Abstammung' ('Attestation of Aryan Descent') completed by a Gerhard Kuhl of 12. (M.G.) Komp. Inf. Regt. 30. The soldier in question signs at the conclusion in black ink, with Pfuhlstein signing in indelible pencil at bottom right. Shows folds, with torn file holes at the left edge, and with pencil biographical inscriptions to the verso, else very good.
