Description:

ADOLF HITLER GOLD MECHANICAL PENCIL, GIFTED TO EVA BRAUN'S FATHER
A simply incredible Adolf Hitler personal relic, a four-color gold presentation mechanical pencil gifted by Hitler to the father of his lover, Eva Braun, on the man's birthday in 1944. The beautifully crafted pen has an octagonal barrel decorated with very fine striations running the length of the pen, with many unworked circles throughout providing a very nice Art Deco appearance. The pen, 5.25 in. long, has four knurled slides on the barrel, any of which may be pushed downwards to lock in place a desired lead color. When another slide is activated, the one already in place automatically unlocks and retracts. The pen is currently fitted with green, red, blue and black leads which are probably original. The pen bears a pocket clip with the name of the maker, 'Goldfink'. Hitler had the pen engraved on one unworked part of the barrel with a facsimile of his signature and the date: '16.9.44'. The pen rests within a black leather zippered case. Hitler presented this case to the father of his lover and future wife, EVA BRAUN (1912-1945). FRIEDRICH 'FRITZ' BRAUN (1879-1964) was a Catholic teacher and not pleased that his daughter was seeing Hitler. Early on, he wrote a letter to Hitler to leave his daughter alone, but Eva intercepted it and destroyed it. After Hitler came to power, Braun saw the advantages of friendship with the Nazis and became a regular visitor to the Berghof. He also became an officer in the German army. The date on the pencil corresponds with Braun's 65th birthday. Fine condition. This fine relic has exceptional, ironclad provenance. Evidence of its authenticity includes: April 7, 1974 statements in both German (on her letterhead) and English signed by ILSE BRAUN (1909-1979), sister of Eva Braun. She writes, in part: '...I certify that the golden four-colored pencil now in the possession of Mr. Ben Swearingen...was once the personal property of my father, Herrn Fritz Braun. The pencil was a birthday present to my father from Adolf Hitler, and was given to him, at the request of the Fuehrer, by my sister, Frau Eva Hitler (geb. Braun). The pencil bears on its side the inscribed date of presentation, '16. 9. 1944' and the facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler...' Also present is a 7 x 9 in. photo of the pencil, with essentially the same message typed and signed on the verso by Ilse. Also present is a T.L.S. from highly respected militaria dealer Ben Swearingen, 1p. 4to., Aug. 4 (1974) in which he mentions he had obtained the pen 'through my personal contact' with Ilse Braun, that he knew that Ilse had possessed the pen for years, and that he had disposed of it via Ray Zyla at Mohawk Arms. There is also at T.L.S. of auctioneer Ray Zyla on Mohawk Arms letterhead, 1p. 4to., Aug. 20, 1974 to Bruce W. Regnemer describing the pen, providing its documentation, and certifying its authenticity. Finally, there is a Nov. 10, 1980 letter from Regnemer to collector Firman Michel of Pennsauken, N.J. mentioning his sale of the pencil to Michel and sending the documents of provenance. Michel passed away approx. seven years ago, and this important relic has been in the hands of his family since then.
