Description:

ADMIRAL JAMES H. FLATLEY'S CAP, CIGARETTE CASE AND PASS
JAMES H. FLATLEY, JR. (1906 - 1958) World War II naval aviator and tactician for the U.S. Navy. Executive Officer of VF-42 and key participant in the Battle of the Coral Sea for which he was awarded the Navy Cross. Formed VF-10, the "Grim Reapers", with successes at Guadalcanal, and later Commander Air Group Five (CAG-5) on board USS Enterprise during which he helped introduce the F6F Hellcat to combat. Later a brilliant Navy air tactician. Fine lot of three relics from the collection of Navy air historian Dale Costello, includes: distinctive khaki Marc Mitscher "baseball" cap with silver and gold Navy pin at front, given to Flatley by Mitscher, probably while the two were serving aboard the carrier LEXINGTON; Flatley's two piece aluminum cigarette case bearing the trademark of "CHANCE VOUGHT", maker of the F4U Corsair for the Navy and Marines, and his "VF 10 Corsair Night" printed pass dated Jan. 20, 1945, undoubtedly used when his VF-10 squadron returned to the States, transitioning to the F4U Corsair in January 1945 at the NAS Atlantic City. With a note in Costello's hand listing the items which were purchased directly from him. Three pieces.
