Description:

ABRAHAM LINCOLN WHITE HOUSE TEACUP AND SAUCER
An excessively rare cup teacup and matching saucer used in the Lincoln White House in 1865 and present there at the time of Lincoln's assassination. These items were from the Lincoln's informal, regularly-used household service, thus saw much more use than the formal pattern used for state dinners. The teacup measures 2 1/2" tall with a delicate handle with gilt decoration, the cup bearing a buff-colored gilt-edged band at top. The saucer is 5 3/4" wide with the same gilt-edged buff band at its edge as well, as well as (worn) gilt trim at center. Both are in otherwise excellent condition and ideal for the collector of Lincolniana. It appears that this same service may have been used in the White House during the administrations of Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant as well. For provenance, please see lot 144 above.
