Description:

A VISIT TO WASHINGTON AND THE WHITE HOUSE
War-date Vermont citizen's letter, 1 3/4pp. 4to., written by a certain "J. C. Bingham" of St. Johnsbury, Washington, March 20, 1862 to his wife. In part: "…The troops are all well & seem to enjoy life…no complaints escapes their lips except about some of their officers…one needs a month in Washington to get…adequate comprehension of the multitude of objects of interest in & about the National buildings…the city however…is far below my anticipation. It has wide streets & side walks but…it looks as though they laid a plan for a magnificent city & it failed…have been to see Mr. Lincoln today but was too late. May stay & see him tomorrow. Have some rebel trophies to carry home. We intend to visit Manassas…some gentleman came near being taken there yesterday by rebel scouts. We supposed our troops were there [and] shall not venture out. There is to be a drill of 30,000 men at Bailey's Cross roads tomorrow…many steamers left here & Alex[andria]…for some point south loaded with troops. Nothing is said about the large number of steamers here…we are at a private boarding house…at 1.25 pr day and we ride on Govt. trains in Va (no others) free of charge…". Very good.
