Description:

A "REBEL YELL" AND ROBBERY OF THE DEAD AT CEDAR CREEK
Fine content Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., Cedar Creek, Oct. 27, 1864 in which Pvt. Cornelius Van Valkenburgh writes his mother eight days after Sheridan's victory. In part: "…we had a hard days fight…the rebels rather played a trick on us…in the morning they came in the rear of us in three lines of Battle, some of the men was in their beds…heavy volley of musketry was heard and a yell with it which made the hills ring and the first thing we know the rebels was in our works and the corps was running for their lives and soon the bullets began to come amongst us and it was all confusion, some running some hollering, all making for the rear…in the morning we had just fell in to start when the ball open…shooting was in the wrong place for the rebels…soon there come a lead messenger through the camp…then another and another…left their clothes and haversacks and left for the rear…we drove the rebels from the field and we got back in our old place…what was worse was to see them strip[ped] of all their clothes…they had taken the pants off…it shows the rebels are destitute of clothing…our cavalry has taken everything out of the valley…all is destruction now…". Very good.
