42ND OHIO VOLS. FIELD AND STAFF MUSTER ROLL
War-date partly-printed D.S., 2pp. folio, 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, ‘Steamship Des Moines', Dec. 31, 1862, signed by LIONEL A. SHELDON (1831-1917), future brevet brigadier general and U.S. Congressman. Under Grant, he participated in the attack on Port Gibson, and saw action during the assault on Thompson's Hill. Wounded in the hand by a musket ball, Colonel Sheldon stayed at his post, leading two gallant charges on the enemy position. Also signed by DON A. PARDEE (1837-1919) Union army veteran, later a U.S. Circuit Judge for the Fifth Circuit Court, along with the rest of the officers, commissioned or otherwise, in the regiment. Included is the name James A. Beer, who was the only officer to die in that regiment. Tape repairs to the verso, otherwise very good.
