Description:

34TH MASS. RECEIVES A NEW BATTLE FLAG
Fine content war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., Worcester, Nov. 12, 1864 to a captain of the 34th Mass. Colonel (later Brevet Brigadier General) William S. Lincoln writes a captain in the 34th Mass. sending a new battle flag to replace one literally shredded at the Battle of New Market. In part: "…Monday's Express will take you a new copy of the 'Stars and Stripes', a present, as you will see by the shield, from some ladies here. I arranged…for the exchange, the old one to be given to the Ladies who originally presented it…We could not procure…silk of width enough for the Field so I consented to have it pieced…I hope you will like it…You will see that instead of taking any stars off, the 35th one has been added…Miss Francis M. Lincoln…has been the chief one acting…a niece of mine and daughter of the Mayor. Please return in the same box the 'old flag'…I am as yet unable to move my shoulder much, have to be helped to get my vest coat and boots on. If it was not for that, and the damned parole I gave, I could join…I live in hope of being with you before long…". Fine condition, with a copy of a photo of the destroyed colors, transcript, etc. At New Market, Lincoln was trapped under his horse which had been killed. He tried to use his pistol to continue fighting, but finally surrendered at the tip of a cadet's bayonet.
