Description:

Fine commemorative publication, a printed album of battlefield sketches, maps and diagrams related to the World War II service of the 29th infantry division. The album, 39pp. folio, reproduces a series of sixteen monochrome sketches depicting the division's combat engagements in Normandy, including the fight for St. Lo, all but two executed by Private Charles E. Murphy of the 121st Engineer Battalion. It also reproduces twenty maps, including vintage charts of England and France, captured German defense plans, charts of specific engagements involving the 29th, and a three-page depiction of their advance through France and Germany on their advance through France. The front cover bears the 29th's hand-painted blue and grey insignia, and is numbered "202". Most interestingly, the introduction page bears the signature of CHARLES H. GERHARDT (1895-1976), the 29th's commanding major general, in blue ink, adding the dedication: "To the 121 Engr. Bn. in its reunion at Boston Sept. 1949. You did a large part to make the Blue & Gray WIN." The covers are unfortunately detached from the text block and show tape residue at the spine, soiling throughout and chips to the edges, still very good overall.
