26 N.C. SOLDIER IS SHELLED BY THE YANKEE NAVY
Confederate officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., "Camp Wilks" (near for Macon), Nov. 22, 1861 in which Lt. John C. McLaughlin [WIA Malvern Hill and Gettysburg], Co. K, 26th NC Inf'y, writes his brother. In part: …I have had a pretty hard time of it…we have to wallow around the fire a good deal to keep warm…I hope we will get to a better place…we have rations enough since we came to this place to kill a horse…A Yankee ship came up very near that day and they expected to have a fight…went into ranks…if they had come out…Two Yankee ships went down there and shelled our men considerably behind the banks, they fired 23 rounds at them…I have a splendid Colt's Navy pistol that was thrown away there by the yankees…". Some clean fold splits, else good, with a post-war A.L.S. to his brother sending him $25.00. Two pieces.
