Description:

21ST MASS. SERGEANT WANTS ACTION!
Union soldier's letter on patriotic letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., Millersville, Md., Dec. 13, 1861. Sgt. Geo. M. Lawrence of the 21st Mass writes (phonetically), in part: "…I want to go South where I have a chance to burn some powder…There is no chance to tell if a fella is a gonna run or not when he hears the bombs whistle around his head…I would run the risk and jump at the chance…Would like to go on the expedition Genl. Burnside which is forming at Annapolis…A good many men run away every day…". Next to an image of Liberty on the first page, he writes: "Is she not pretty? She has got it". Very good. By Mar. 6, 1863 Lawrence would be a first lieutenant.
