Description:

1828 PATTERN HIGHLAND OFFICER''S SWORD, BY HENRY WILKINSON
Scottish 1828 Pattern Highland Officer''s Sword, 32 1/2" blade, 39" overall, with a double-edged blade featuring two parallel fullers at the ricasso, with a single fuller further along at center. The obverse ricasso is acid etched with the name of the maker, "Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London", beneath the Royal Coat of Arms and "By Warrant". The reverse ricasso bears a proof mark with the maker''s initials "HW" on an inset brass medallion. The spine of the blade at the ricasso bears the serial number "47749", neatly dating the sword to the period 1914 to 1917. The hilt features a basket hand guard with attractive heart-shaped perforated decorations, lined with white leather covered with red felt, with a blue silk border. The grip is of gray fish skin, sadly lacking the original braided wire wrapping. The remnants of a red tassel are secured to the base of the basket by the pommel. The sword is housed in a bright steel scabbard. The steel of the blade and basket shows a slight layer of surface oxidation throughout, as does the scabbard, else very good.
