1798 ESTATE OF A LARGE GROUP OF SLAVES
Rare early 18th century slave indenture being a true copy of the original, 2pp. 4to., Jan. 19, 1801, in which John and Phillips, Jr. bequeaths his slaves: "…Stephen, Pomp, Kate, Tom and little Tom…" to his children, with Elizabeth Phillips: "…content and satisfied to take & actually hath taken as her part of the negro slaves belonging to the said estate the following slaves, to wit, Charles, Roger, Abb, Jude, Edmund, Will, Frank…". Additionally, profits from the sale of other slaves and possessions were used to purchase additional slaves, namely: "…Will, Phoebe, Peter and Annica, and Dick…". Toned, with a chip at top margin, else very good.
