Early Nineteenth-century U.S. Army officer's "Chapeau de Bras" dress hat, constructed of black stiffened fabric with a velvet-like finish, and featuring a large, black feather attached to the front end and running back along the crown. The right-hand side bears a black silk cockade with a brass American eagle badge at center, over a band of black lacework. The interior is fitted with a black leather sweatband and lined with black silk, with a ribbon cross the crown printed with the owner's name " A.H. Walton" in gold. A small paper label at the rear gives the size as 7 1/8. The exterior has lost much of its velvet finish, with minor soiling overall, else very good.
