First photograph of the first meeting between Americans and Russians at the Elbe River on April 25, 1945, annotated and signed by first soldier to greet the Russians, Lt. William D. Robinson. This lot also includes a letter from Robinson to famous collector, Rev. Cornelius Greenway, 2pp. 4to., Culver City, Dec. 5, 1966, explaining the event. Robinson, who is universally acknowledged as being the first American to greet the Russians, thanks Greenway for his letters and identifies several other photos Greenway had sent him, including one with Silvaschko, the Russian lieutenant who was "set up" as the first Russian in a photo shoot the following day. He adds: "I am enclosing another picture, and this really is a First. It has never been published! It was actually taken at the time of the patrol, and is the first of the link-up. One of the men in the patrol had a camera, and was standing on the west bank of the Elbe as I was crawling across...A Russian soldier (unknown) was crawling toward the west and we met in the middle...This is the only picture of the actual meeting itself...unposed..." Also present is the photo Robertson included with his letter, 4 1/2" x 3 1/2", showing several men standing in the shallow water of the Elbe beside the shattered Elbe bridge. On the verso, Robertson writes: "1st actual picture of our link-up, taken by one of our patrol. I am 1/2 way across the bridge - meeting a Russian. [Signed] W. D. Robertson" The photo shows five Russians on the opposite shore, with Robertson's figure visible standing just on the bridge, visible just above the center of the lower margin. Two pieces, fine condition.
