EMIL F. REINHARDT (1888–1969) American major general most noted during World War II as commander of the 69th Infantry Division, which became the first American unit to come into contact with units of the Soviet Red Army, at Torgau on the Elbe River. Fine content A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., San Antonio, Jan. 31, 1967 to collector Cornelius Greenway. Reinhardt discusses a posed photograph taken of the American and Russian soldiers greeting each other on the bridge at Torgau, noting: "...The soldiers in the picture probably posed for the picture but they could not have gone out 25 miles beyond our front lines to pose for a picture the day following the event. The contact was made April 25, 1945 and simultaneously announced from Washington, London and Moscow on April 27, 1945. I personally met with Maj. Gen. Vladimir Russokov at Torgau on April 26..."
