War-date document bearing the rare signatures of Confederate Major Gen. PATRICK R. CLEBURNE (1817-1880) and Brigadier Gen. BUSHROD R. JOHNSON (1824-1906). The document is 1p. large 4to. "Application for Transfer" by one August Schwartz, [n.p., n.d.]. Schwartz states that he has been a member of the "Breckenridge Escort", and enlisted in Natchez on May 3, 1862 as a musician with the 32nd Alabama. He further states that on Oct. 7, 1862 the band lost its instruments during a battle at Laverne resulting to his transfer to the Guards. He asks that he now be sent to the 23rd Mississippi to fill a vacancy for a musician. At bottom his company captain, one "A. M. Blackburn" approves and forwards the request. On the verso, an unidentified colonel of the 23rd [Miss.?] approves the transfer. Beneath appears the signed endorsement of BUSHROD R. JOHNSON: "Hd Qrs. Johnson's Brig. Tullahoma Mch 19th 63 Approved & earnestly recommended. Musicians are very much needed in this Brigade." Johnson signs and adds his rank. The last endorsement is an A.E.S. by PATRICK R. CLEBURNE. An aide dates the endorsement Mar. 17, 1862, and Cleburne writes: "Approved & Forw'd P. R. Cleburne Maj. Genl". Excellent condition.
