(1807 - 1894) Union Judge Advocate General empowered to suspend the writ of habeas corpus, tried Fitz-John Porter and the Lincoln assassins. War-date A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., St. Louis, Dec. 6, 1861 to the stewards of the St. Nicholas Society of New York declining their invitation to attend their anniversary dinner and sending his congratulations. A few tiny marginal repairs backed with archival tape, else fine. The society is an organization of men who are descended from early inhabitants of the State of New York. It preserves historical and genealogical records of the state’s Dutch and English rule.
