(1835 - 1912) Union brigadier general and colonel of the 18th Mass. Vols. Hayes and the 18th campaigned with the Army of the Potomac at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg where he was wounded. Hayes was captured at Weldon Rail Road and briefly held at Libby Prison. Partly-printed war-date D.S., 1p. 4to., Warrenton Junction, Va., Nov. 16, 1863, a “Special Requisition” for winter garments, camp equipment, shelter tents, knapsacks, etc. for use by the 18th Mass., signed in a shaky hand by Hayes (likely still suffering from the effects of his Gettysburg wound) at left. Also signed twice by First Lt. Sanford Almy. Marginal chipping and some old tape repairs to verso, else very good.
