(1821 - 1896) Confederate major general who served under Joe Johnston and assumed command of his army until succeeded on the field by Robert E. Lee, he later led Georgia militia forces in a defense against Sherman's March. Scarce, fine association war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 8vo., "Head Quarters 2nd Corps, Centerville", Dec. 12, 1861, to PAUL J. SEMMES (1815-1863), then Colonel of the 2nd Georgia. In part: "...The Brigade Quarter Master and Brigade Commissary are under the direction and control of the Brigade commander...and he...has authority to order a team to be turned over to the commissary for commissary purposes, and require forage to be furnished...I hope you will have no further difficulty...and suggest that you require obedience to your own instructions and in the future if like cases are referred to this office if may be after disobedience of your orders. I can then take hold of it..." Some slight blurring of ink in words along one fold, else very good.
