An early Gettysburg recovered relic, a 5" x 2 3/4" wood and brass crucifix in only lightly "dug" condition. According to a printed note of provenance included, the cross was recovered at the site of Camp Letterman, a field hospital located two miles east of Gettysburg and at the time, the largest field hospital ever erected in North America with over 500 tents. This relic was purchased by long-time local collector/dealer Joseph Ament from the estate of the owner of the Shields Museum. The Shields Museum stood along Route 30 just west of Gettysburg and housed a large collection of artifacts related to the battle until its closure in the 1980's.
